Choosing to be an Engineer

Simulation of a bra

Hello Dear readers,
today I want to talk about the use of Finite Elements Method on ... yeah, you read right... a BRA.

The FEM is used to do a stress, flow or temperature analysis of - usually - mechanically components of a machine or something related. By dividing that component in a huge amount of small cubic or triangle elements, the stress problems can be solved.

In a graphical output, the stresses are displayed. Usually, the higher the stress, the color gets more into the reddish side.





The Video above shows such a FEM simulation done on a bra. As you can see, the areas displayed in the blue-ish colors are hardly stressed.
 
When talking about machine parts, every engineer is trying to save material, as it is one major cost factor in production.


So you may think, why not save material costs in BRA INDUSTRY???



Picture above is me at the beach (with my ex bf cut off, actually)... I'm actually too shy to wear more lean bras or bikinis... though I know now, that most of the cloth used is not necessary!

Excavator Destruction

Hello Friends,

today I want to introduce you to a real monster, the LIEBHERR R9800.



In that video above - some of you may already know it - it simply destroys a car, using nothing more than  42 tons of water.

Shock resistance of Surface Coatings



This picture shows the zones of failure in an impact situation on coated surfaces.

In the peripheral zone there are the well-known bending-cracks, caused by the stretching of the substrate layer during the plastical deformation caused by the indenter.

In the central zone, the coating material cracks cohesively, thus causing irregular crack structures. This zone is especially large for brittle coating materials, such as (Di-)Chrome Nitride.

The zone in between shows failure of both types mentioned above.


To clear things up: this is sort of the things that make your saws, knifes and razors blunt.

Topic of research is to develop coatings that are very resistant against this kind of wear, as well as against abrasive wear, to keep the perfect quality of the surface for a longer time, thus keeping knifes sharp much longer.

Mobile Cranes

Now a little Teaser to LIEBHERR Mobile Cranse as they can be seen regularly on many construction sites.


The pictures above show the crane "LIEBHERR LTM 11200-9.1". It is the strongest telescope crane in the world atm.
It can lift up to 1200 tons up to 100m height. With an additional spire construction, even up to 226m height.
It is powered by a 500 kW Diesel Engine for driving and a 270 kW Diesel Engine for lifting.

With its 9 axes and 1.50m high wheels it reaches a top speed of 75 km / h.

Money talks





This picture shows a chart, which engineering position earns how much money on average, at the beginning of job life.

I really hope that works out for me, too!

Trying to rech that "F&E" stuff, which means science and development, that seems to be best paid, about 40.000€ income per year.

With your support and interest in this blog, i will sure end up in a good job, because I of course do additional research for posting here.

HM Drills





This picture shows drills made from HM.
They are very hard and resist high temperature, thus allowing a large increase in drilling speed, without overheating.

Especially well-known is the "golden" TiN: it is the most commonly used hard coating for drills today, being used in DIY-home-machines, too.

Some people say, its popularity descended from the well-looking golden color.

Engineer > Lawyer!!

Hello everybody,

as of now, no material physics in this post because I'm a bit mad after a discussion with a friend of mine who studies laws and financial.

She was bragging with her studies, told me they were the most important subjects there are at all. Concerning banks, credits and that stuff...

I just told her, without the inventions of engineers, she couldn't even go to court with her car......


What's your opinion? If you had the choice, what would you rather be, lawyer or engineer?

The inclined Impact Test

The inclined impact test constitutes a new reference to the prediction of the coatings’ impact failure, managing to approach loading stages of coated surfaces in different applications. In this experimental method, the repetitive impacts are applied on an oblique coated surface, which is loaded vertically and tangentially simultaneously. To calculate the occurring stress distribution in the loaded film’s and substrate’s region, an appropriate finite elements method (FEM) simulation is developed, which considers the mechanical elastic–plastic properties of all involved materials. In this way, critical equivalent stresses leading to a coating damage can be determined and moreover, the ratio of tangential to the normal stiffness between film and substrate can be quantified. This magnitude describes the adhesion strength and was further experimentally–analytically determined for coatings deposited on various adherent substrates. With the aid of the coating impact adhesion (CIA) metric, the film adhesion can further be qualitatively characterized and correlated to the film contact stiffness ratio.

Now talking about measuring a surface coating's thickness using the so called "calotest".

With a ball of steel and diamond suspension as grinder, you grind a calotte into the surface.

Looking at that calotte with a microscope, you will gain a view like the scheme above indicates: two concentrical circles.

By measuring these circles diameters you can calculate the height "h" of the surface:

The total depth of the Calotte T is: 


the depth of the calotte in the substrate t is: 


thus, the height h of the surface is: 

as the radius R of the steel ball is much greater than the diameter of the calotte, this equation can be simplified to:

How a hammer mechanism works

This picture shows a scheme of a hammer mechanism with notched plates as it is typically used in drill hammers.

Part (A) shows the basic position of the hammer mechanism. By turning the upper notched plate, it is lifted from the lower one, thus tensioning a spring in the upper part of the machine. (B)

Further turning of the upper notched plate will cause a release of the saved spring energy. This spring energy is directly converted into kinetic energy. As a result, the drill will move forward, like being hammered while turning.


Using this technique, you can achieve a hammering frequency of up to 200 strikes/second easily.
